Health Care Reform and Optometry

Welcome

The Optometry Association of Louisiana (OAL) is a group of state licensed optometrists who deliver primary eye care to citizens in all parts of Louisiana. Over 275 members strong, the organization provides continuing education programs for its doctors, sponsors programs to improve optometry in Louisiana, and represents Louisiana nationally in optometric programs and events. The OAL also promotes legislation that allows optometrists in Louisiana to provide better eye care to all of our citizens.

What is a Doctor of Optometry?

Doctors of optometry are independent primary health care providers who examine, diagnose, treat and manage diseases and disorders of the visual system, the eye and associated structures as well as diagnose related systemic conditions. For more information, visit the American Optometric Association's website.

Mid Winter Meeting Is Back!

The OAL is pleased to bring back the popular Mid Winter CE Meeting. For a time, it was suspended in lieu of the "Spring Practice Management Conference". It was decided to return to the Mid Winter CE format and hold it earlier in the year, when things are typically less busy. For 2012, the return to the Mid Winter Meeting will be held:

February 11, 2012

Embassy Suites
4914 Constitution Avenue, Baton Rouge, Louisiana 70808

Invest In Your Practice...Invest In Your Staff!

There is a way for you to provide better vision care for your patients - without spending thousands of dollars on new equipment or traveling thousands of miles to learn the newest optometric procedures. How? By increasing the skills and abilities of the members of your staff - through their membership in the Optometry Association of Louisiana- Paraoptometric Section.

The OAL-PS offers a broad spectrum of educational opportunities to help improve paraoptometric skills which, in turn, means better overall vision care for your patients. The OAL-PS was founded for the benefit of not only paraoptometrics, but for their employers as well. A well-trained paraoptometric can perform many routine office procedures, giving you more time to spend with your patients - and that means better care. The OAL-PS also provides an opportunity for paraoptometrics to meet, make new friends, share ideas, and enjoy quality time with their peers.

By clicking on the "read more" link here, you can download a membership application. Or, to learn more about the newly reorganized OAL-PS, click on "Events & CE Info" on the left menu bar.

If you have any questions or would like further information on becoming a member, please contact me.

Cordially,
Amy Godeaux, CPOT

In the News: DENHAM SPRINGS, La (NBC33) — 'Infant See'

DENHAM SPRINGS, La (NBC33) — 'Infant See' is a free program designed by optometrists to give babies a boost on their eye health. Suzanne Mitchelle credits the program with saving her son's sight. Optometrist Cynthia Baker found cataracts were blocking Emory's vision during his free 'Infant See' exam. Emory had surgery to remove the cataracts and now wears contacts. Suzanne says she could see a change in him right away. "The first time we put his contacts in, he studied the zipper on my jacket and the stubble on his dad's face," she said. "That's not something we ever thought for him to be looking at, and now he's just a normal two year old". For a list of Optometrists participating in 'Infant See' go to: www.infantsee.org
